Two things decide what a transformer is worth, and neither is obvious from across the yard: how much of its weight is copper rather than aluminum, and how much of it is core steel rather than winding.

We work it out from the nameplate before anything moves, quote it in writing, handle the rigging and the transport, and hand back documentation of where every part of it ended up.

How transformer disposal works

  1. Identify and assess

    Nameplate data, kVA rating, dry-type versus oil-filled, winding material and construction — the four things that actually set the value.

  2. Quote

    A written offer reflecting recoverable metal content, less any regulated-disposal cost — which we state explicitly rather than burying.

  3. Removal and transport

    Rigging, spill containment and DOT-compliant transport for oil-filled units.

  4. Drain and process

    Oil is drained under containment and routed for proper handling. The core and coil are processed for copper, aluminum and steel recovery.

  5. Document

    Cradle-to-grave records: test results, manifests, weight tickets and final disposition — the file your regulator will ask for.

Transformer Recycling — common questions

How much is a scrap transformer worth?

It depends on three things: total weight, whether the windings are copper or aluminum, and whether the unit is dry-type or oil-filled. Copper windings are worth several times aluminum per pound, so two units with the same nameplate rating can be worth very different amounts. Oil-filled units carry handling costs that offset some of the metal value. Send us nameplate photos and we will price it properly.

Do you handle the removal, or do we have to deliver it?

Either. We run removal crews with rigging, containment and transport across Texas, and we also take delivery at our Arlington yard. For anything oil-filled or awkward to access, letting us handle the removal is usually the simpler path.

What is inside a transformer that is actually recyclable?

Copper or aluminum windings, silicon steel core laminations, a steel tank or enclosure, bushings, and the insulating oil. The windings carry most of the value; the core steel is significant by weight; the oil is either a recoverable product or a regulated waste depending on test results.

Can you remove transformers from an active substation?

Yes, coordinated with your outage schedule and your qualified electrical personnel. We work under an ISO 45001 safety management system and can complete site-specific pre-qualification.

Do you buy dry-type transformers?

Yes. Dry-type units are simpler to move and process because there is no oil to drain, so the transaction is generally faster.
